The Medical Profession Amendment Act of 2023, introduced in the legislature on Thursday, will regulate physician assistants in the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons and establish the scope of the new profession.
Physician assistants are currently licensed to work in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick.
Health Secretary Paul Merriman said they are part of a broader plan that also aims to improve the supply of nurses and doctors.

"We're looking into all of that," Merriman told reporters. "It's not just the physician assistants, it's not just the nurses, it's the primary care ward. If you look at physician-led primary care, this is a piece that takes some of the pressure off."
According to the press release, medical assistants have additional training through an accredited program in Canada. They practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, often within a multidisciplinary health care team.
Physician assistants (PAs) are employed primarily in primary care, long-term care, emergency medicine, cancer treatment, general internal medicine, and surgical specialties. Key responsibilities include performing patient examinations, prescribing medications, and ordering and interpreting tests.

Merriman said they will be employed bySaskatchewanhealth authority and be posted where "they are best deployed".
Considered more autonomous, professional nurses, or NPs, may also diagnose and treat illnesses, order tests, and prescribe medications. However, they have previously said that they are underutilized.
A survey conducted last year bySaskatchewanThe Association of Nurse Practitioners found that 35% of part-time NPs would like to work full-time. Additionally, 10 percent said they were not employed because there were no jobs available. In total, 124 people participated in the survey.
If their reach is expanded, the association says, NPs could help address pressures in primary care.

Merriman said he is in talks with the group to expand its reach.
He said the government is also considering expanding the scope to advanced care paramedics and pharmacists.
“We're not just looking for a way to solve some of the problems that exist. We are expanding the scope, adding new professions," said Merriman.
The NDP opposition had previously called on the government to launch training programs to help NPs advance professionally, particularly in rural areas where they are most needed.
NDP health critic Vicki Mowat said the Palestinian Authority could be part of the solution to ease the pressure on primary care.
But he said the government needed to make system-wide changes.

"This could be a solution, but it's a patch solution," Mowat said. “We have to make sure that we have this basic care reform and that we have team care. Ultimately, we have a shortage of general practitioners in our province and we need people who have access to family medicine.”
Canadian Physician Assistants Association (CAPA) Saskatchewan Todd Bryden is quoted in the press release as saying, "This is a critical step in the effective deployment of PAs in the province at a critical time when the health care system is struggling to the edges are loaded.
“The regulation of PAs by the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons means that provincial PAs, like other regulated healthcare professionals in the region, must meet standards of competence, safety and ethics. This ensures they are accountable for the care they provide and protects the public, strengthening and lending credibility to the PA profession in Canada," he said, calling PAs "an integral part of the health care team and will contribute" to improving capacity of our health care system."

The provincial government hopes the new charge will help reduce waiting times, improve hospital discharge rates and reduce length of stay.
The provincial budget initially provided $1.3 million to create 12 physician assistant positions throughout the health system.
Prior to the plan, the Department of Health consulted with key stakeholders, including the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants, according to the news release.
To become a PA, someone must first complete two to four years of elementary school and then complete a specialized CF program. There are three schools that offer CF programs, including two in Ontario and one in Manitoba.
SaskatchewanOrder of Physicians President Dr. John Gjevre said the organization supports PAs "in principle" when they play a role in complementary care.
"This change must be made with care and consideration to ensure that patient care is improved," he said in a statement.
The law enters into force from its promulgation.
