In this article we take a look at the Canon EOS 7D mkII, originally released in 2014.
I'll not only cover what this camera can and can't do, but also who should buy it.

And now let's start with the size and structure.
oCanon EOS 7D mkIIThe camera measures 5.85 x 4.43 x 3.08 inches and weighs around 32 ounces, or around 907 grams with battery and card.
The camera is robust, mainly made of magnesium alloy and built like a tank. Plus, it has improved environmental sealing, which means you don't have to worry about it getting a bit wet.
The first thing that struck me when I picked it up was how much larger it is compared to other Canon cameras. The DSLR I had before was aCanon 77D, and the difference in size is immediately noticeable.
The Canon 7D mkII feels great in your hand and makes you feel like a pro, especially if your previous camera was something like a T6 or T7.
The Canon 7D mkII has a 22.4 x 15.0mm APS-C sensor. You can capture JPEG and/or RAW photos at 20MP, which is a photo resolution of 5472 x 3648 pixels.
The ISO goes from 100 to 16,000 and in special modes you can reach 25,600 and 51,200. That's not saying much, though, because like most cameras, images can start to look pretty grainy once you've passed ISO 10,000 or so.
With my photos, I try to never exceed ISO 2000, but that's just my preference, and the environment you're shooting in is also an important factor to consider.
The dynamic range is not as good as some of the newer, more expensive DSLRs because the7D mkIIIt came out in 2014, but when you can control the light or manipulate it to suit your needs, that's rarely a problem.
To clarify, I'm not saying dynamic range is bad, I'm just pointing out that the camera is around 8 years old at this point.
To demonstrate this fact, I will show you some photos that I took with this camera. First, here are some photos I took with a model during my stay in Porto, Portugal.
Secondly, here are some photos I took in a zoo near Porto.
As you can see, the images are detailed and sharp, and as long as you know what you're doing with lighting, angles, and composition, you can still get great images despite how old your camera is.
In continuous shooting, the 7D mkII achieves 10 frames per second. This is very useful when shooting moving subjects, such as sports or nature.
The reason is that it allows you to capture ten separate images in one second, increasing the chances of catching the right moment when your subject is moving.
Burst duration is a maximum of 31 frames in RAW shots, which it should be, and 1090 frames in JPEG shots. The only other limitation might be your SD card, but if you recently bought one, that shouldn't be an issue.
The 7D mkII comes with a 3-inch fixed screen. This model does not have a rotating screen. Since the screen can't be moved, this not only makes vlogging more difficult, but also makes it more difficult to shoot from awkward angles.
It also has a fairly generously sized top-tier backlit LCD screen, which comes in handy when shooting in low light.
Photographers have different opinions on whether or not the top LCD screen is really necessary. I like it, so I'd rather have it than not have it.
What's immediately noticeable is that the 7D mkII retains a similar knob and button layout to many other Canon cameras.
For those who have used Canon cameras before, it should feel pretty intuitive to use right out of the box.
At the rear, just above the steering wheel, you even get a little thumb controller, which I really like. It allows a fairly continuous navigation through the menus.
One of the reasons this camera looks "professional" is the dual card slot. It has your normal SD card slot and a Compact Flash or UDMA slot.
For example, when recording events, each photo or video is stored on both cards, so you have a backup in case one of them fails.
In terms of battery life, the camera uses a larger capacity LP-E6N battery. Since the 7D mkII was discontinued years ago, your battery is probably quite a few years old at this point.
As a result, while originally rated for 800 shots, they naturally have a reduced capacity.
How much charge they can actually hold depends on when the battery was made, how many pictures were taken with it, and how often it was charged.
Please note that the shutter on the Canon 7D mkII is rated for 200,000 activations. That means you can take around 200,000 photos before the shutter fails.
When buying this device, the seller usually announces the number of shutter clicks. If not, contact them and ask first.
If they refuse to tell you or say they don't know, that probably means it's close to max or even above and I personally would look for another seller.
For example, if your camera has 150,000 clicks left to use up in, say, five years, you would need to take 82 pictures every day.
The 7D mkII can record video at 1080p, with a maximum frame rate of 60fps. When it comes to the file type, you can choose between MOV or MP4.
In 2022, when it comes to video, I really wouldn't use an 8 year old camera. For photography sure, but for video I'd go with something newer like the Canon 77D or even the Canon R series.

In terms of lenses, the 7D mkII can take both EF and EF-S lenses, giving you an almost endless list of glasses to choose from.
I tested this camera with a few different lenses. If you go back to the article where I showed the photos, I included what lenses they were taken with, just to give you an idea of what they are capable of.
So finally, who should buy this lens?
Since the camera was around 8 years old at the time of writing, I wouldn't recommend it for video. You can shoot 1080p video at 60fps, but there are plenty of affordable cameras out there that would do much better.
As you can see from the examples I've included above, if you know what you're doing, you can get amazing results when taking photos.
If you're buying your first DSLR or looking to upgrade from an older Rebel series camera, this might be the right option for you.
