Comments:He is the undisputed "king" of all double-dice variants. After all these years you wouldn't think there was anything new to learn about this strain, but thanks to Richard Snow we now know that there are actually two stages of this strain. Apparently the tools were collided at some point during the operation of the tools, removed from the tooling press for grinding to remove any impact marks from the tools, and then the tools were returned to the tooling press to continue production. We know that the duplicate mold was eventually discovered and removed from production. Was the double die discovered about the time the dies wore out, but put back into production until a foreman could investigate the fault? There was an extremely high demand for pennies at the time, so this may have been a factor in the stamp being put back into production before a foreman inspected the coins and ordered the stamp not to be used. If this is the case, the worn-out B tier specimens can be much rarer than the previous tier coins. Are there also samples that show the impact marks before they were removed? This strain has been targeted by counterfeiters so make sure the sample you wish to purchase is genuine before spending your money. To learn more about this particular breed of double dice, we recommend checking out the Hot Topics section ofThe Official Reference to Lincoln Cents - Second Editionwhich is available elsewhere on this website.
